Peels aren’t scary!
Peels are one of the foundational professional skincare treatments that almost everyone has heard of in popular culture or read in a facial treatment menu. The word peel to someone new to facials invokes images of what your arms or legs might look like after a bad sunburn when sheets of damaged and dead skin literally can peel off. To others, it might stir up memories of Kim Cattrall playing Samantha Jones in “Sex and the City” and her disastrous peel experience.
We’re here to let you know that Peels Aren’t scary!
Your skin is constantly replacing itself by creating new skin cells at the lowest layer of your skin that make their way slowly to the outer layers over approximately 27 days. The most common way to improve the texture of healthy skin is by exfoliating and removing the oldest, now dead, skin cells on the surface layers of your skin.
The most common form of exfoliation is manual or physical exfoliation. For our clients this is most likely experienced through the Cranberry Seeds and Jojoba Bead in your O Exfoliating Cleanser, the Australian Lime Pearls in your Ginger & Me Power Exfoliant Mask, or the diamond head on our microdermabrasion device. Some supermarket brands of cleansers and exfoliants even use tiny pieces of plastic in their product to provide this physical exfoliating action that is afterward flushed down the sink and into the environment - something to avoid!
Peels are another form of exfoliation that uses acids or enzymes to improve texture and remove these same dead skin cells. Because there is no physical “scrubbing” action, a light enzyme peel can be even more gentle than manual exfoliation and suitable even for very sensitive skin with no visible peeling involved at all.
The other words that can cause the imagination to run wild are “acid” and “enzyme”. However, when we talk about acids and enzymes, we are most often referring to the Natural Fruit Acids such as those found in our O Cosmedics Pumpkin Enzyme Peel and Pomegranate Enzyme Peel.
That’s not to say that all peels are mild. If you are using active skincare and looking for a fantastic resurfacing and corrective treatment, you can work up to our O Cosmedics Alpha Beta peel which uses a combination of Salicylic Acid (a naturally occurring acid found in berries and vegetables), Lactic Acid (a naturally occurring organic acid), Alpha Hydroxy Acid (found in various fruits, sugar cane and sour milk) and Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B). The Alpha-Beta peel found in our ABC facial is ideal for oily, problematic skin that requires extreme exfoliation. This level of peel is not one we would recommend the day before a wedding!
The other fantastic benefit of our range of peels is the pairing with other compounds to provide benefits beyond just exfoliation. Our O Cosmedics Catalyst Retinol Peel contains concentrated levels of vitamin A - excellent for skin health, repair, correction, and inflammation in even the most weakened skins.
We love our range of peels and the fantastic results our clients see - and to introduce peels to those who have always been interested but too nervous to take the first step, we’re offering an $89 express peel treatment called “Peels Aren’t Scary” for a limited time only. This special offer incorporates one of our introductory Fruit Enzyme Peels and a soothing alginate mask - but be sure to book your treatment soon as our diary is filling up fast!
